Comment:
I enjoyed this book despite its ambiguities, and they are many. Yanagihara writes so very well that I could hardly put the book down. As others have noted, the book is really 3 different books, that take place in different eras, with different characters, but those characters often share the same names that were in earlier books and some of the same characteristics. The first book, which takes place in the 19th century, is a love story. David, the heir to the family fortune, is an aimless young man who falls in love with Edward, who may or may not be a scoundrel, much to the disappointment of David's grandfather who had hoped David would marry Charles, a man of great character whose family is newly wealthy. The second book starts with a love story between a different David and Charles, but to me, the real story is about David's father's coming under the spell of yet another Edward. The third book, consisting partly of letters written by a scientist named Charles and party of first-person narrative by Charles' granddaughter, Charlie, paints a horrific picture of a dystopian America that is periodically hit by pandemic after pandemic, not to mention the ravages of climate change. Many of the pleasures of life as we know them are either no longer available or are forbidden. Gays are not permitted to marry. Society is strictly class-based and the government appears to be on the verge of thought control if it isn't already. Sadly I can imagine that some in power now wouldn't find much of this all that bad.
Each book ends in ambiguity. And perhaps that's OK. I'm just hoping that Charlie made it to New Britain.I enjoyed this book despite its ambiguities, and they are many. If you liked the movie Bull Durham, this short book by the script writer and director of that movie is a must-read. Written with humor and by now more than 3 decades of experience in the movie business (as well as a lengthy stint as a minor league baseball player), Shelton explains how Bull Durham was made, from the script to the casting, to what was left on the cutting room floor. Sprinkled with numerous quotes from the movie, the book is a quick and enjoyable read.If you liked the movie Bull Durham, this short book by the script writer and director of that movie is a must-read. Wow! The first large scope book about a subject our government has kept under wraps for years: using Nisei (primarily kibei) during World War II to act as translators and interpreters in the Pacific Theater--because who else could do it? Although their primary job was non combat, that didn't mean they didn't face all the same hazards as their fellow Caucasian soldiers did, plus many of them had to have their own personal bodyguards to minimize being shot "as the enemy." Informative and moving. Highly recommended.Wow! Fascinating book about the 1940s era Cleveland Indians nka the Cleveland Guardians, focusing on their owner, the innovative Bill Veeck, and three of the best known members of the team, Satchel Paige, Larry Doby, and Bob Feller. The book doesn't sugarcoat all the racism that Paige and Doby endured. Nor does it try to hide Feller's faults. Veeck's contributions to baseball, including being the only AL owner for years to add Black Americans as players, still are with us today--fireworks, exploding scoreboards, etc. A must read for all baseball history fans.Fascinating book about the 1940s era Cleveland Indians nka the Cleveland Guardians, focusing on their owner, the innovative Bill Veeck, and three of the best known members of the team, Satchel Paige, Larry Doby, and Bob Feller. Jamie Raskin was very impressive in the second Trump impeachment proceedings, so I decided to read his memoir. The memoir runs from the suicide of his only son, just days before the January 6 insurrection, through the second impeachment proceedings, to the beginning of the January 6 committee's work. This beautifully written memoir covers Maya Angelou's childhood and what a childhood it was! Starting with living with her grandmother in the Deep South and ending living with her mother in San Francisco, Angelou (her maiden name was Johnson, Angelou was a corruption of her first husband's last name) traces her childhood hopes and fears as a black child living in the Jim Crow South to becoming San Francisco's first black street car "conductorette" at the age of 15 (she lied about her age). This beautifully written memoir covers Maya Angelou's childhood and what a childhood it was! I really enjoyed the author's Kindred, but I just couldn't get into this book. The premise is that Duro is trying to create a new "race" (the book does not use the word "species")--not human, but they can assume human forms, steal energy from each other, and even kill each other. He's been working for centuries on selective breeding and now he singles out Mary as his hope for the future. But against her wishes, he limits her "recruitment" efforts. The book ends in a battle royale between Duro and Mary.I really enjoyed the author's Kindred, but I just couldn't get into this book.
