Read to a Dog is designed to allow young learners the chance to read to a non-judgmental listener, one who will accept the story exactly as it's read. For many children, this allows them a rare chance to experience stress free reading; they're able to relax and have fun while sharing a book.
All of these elements work together to increase a child's motivation to read, which is an essential element in becoming a successful reader.
Come to the library to read to one of our dogs, Emma Jay or Jackson, who will alternate Wednesdays.
Emma Jay Is a Chihuahua-Dachshund mix – a Chiweenie. Her favorite activities are lying outside in the sun; sitting on the patio swing; barking at coyotes (not a good idea!), chasing lizards and being petted as kids read to her.
Jackson is 10.5 years old and is a German Shepherd/Poodle mix (according to the DNA test) but her really looks like a Wolfhound, 105 lbs! He's very calm, sweet and loves petting - even does some tricks.
How does Read to a Dog work?
Kids come to library during Read to a Dog and select a book to read to a furry friend. All of the dogs and handlers who participate have been certified as therapy dogs by an accredited organization.
