In this three-hour-long fiber-arts workshop, participants will gain hands-on experience stitching a barrette embellished with sequins.
Sequin embroidery is a technique commonly used in high fashion from France and Italy, in contemporary Russian fashion, and in textiles from India. Some of those techniques are being repurposed in this project, raising awareness of the skill.
The technique used in making this project is easy to learn, and even though the barrette measures 2¼ inches long, large sequins and beads help it stitch up fast.
Participants will leave with a finished barrette and a printed set of instructions illustrated with step-by-step photos. The materials are easy to source, so with their printout and the experience gained during class, you can make other barrettes later to give as gifts.
This project is appropriate for ages 16 and up. No prior experience is necessary
