I think my expectations were too high. This was my first lipogram and while it takes extraordinary skill to execute, I just didn't find it as fun or funny as people say. A challengingly memorable read.

Is this political satire or a comedy of wordplay? Answer: yes. Either way, it’s hilarious. I especially enjoyed how the answer to the conundrum appears (out of part of a sub-plot) several chapters before the characters realize it (watch…

Approaching Ella Minnow Pea I’m inclined to try and write something clever. Attempt to write without using a specific letter in the alphabet, which as I learned from this novel is called a lipogram. Frame each paragraph as a different…

Nishita, APL Teen Volunteer “I am angry that all we have come to value, perhaps even take for granted, is being ripped from us, one tile at a time.” Ella Minnow Pea is a young girl living on the island of Nollop, named after Nevin…

I picked this book up because of the title, it made me think of LMNOP. I didn't realize, that the book is about letters and pangrams. I found it interesting and a quick read. It will be especially fun for lovers of English, linguistics,…

I wish I could give this 0 stars. I'm sorry, I found it pretentious and boring.

A very short, but intriguing book! It has definitely never been done before. It had a very formal feel, but I was totally digging it, reminded me a lot of Little Women. The story follows a young woman by the name of Ella Minnow Pea. The…

Ella Minnow Pea by Mark Dunn is a silly little story that follows a young girl of the same name living in Nollop, a small island off the coast of South Carolina. The island, named after Nevin Nollop, the author of the phrase containing all…

Although filled with quite a formal language, Ella Minnow Pea is captivating and humourous. Following the story of Ella, a girl from the island of Nollop, this story breaks down deifying ideologies and challenges the meaning of…

Loved this very short book. The author has given us the story by letting us read the letters each of the characters are writing and mailing to to one another. Quick read, but very thought provoking. I recommended the book right away to…

Interesting idea, but I found the long rambling letters which compose the body of the book to be rather tedious. It was fun seeing the effect of dropping letters from the alphabet. However, if one point of the book was illustrating the…

Welcome to the island nation of Nollop, where language and education are paramount and technology is a mere frivolity. We are named after Nevin Nollop, the creator of the revered pangram: "The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog".…

Interesting political satire about authoritarianism and the lengths to which people will go to subvert it. This is set on a fictional island where words are very, very valued. The city council forbids the use of letters that fall off…

I actually came across this book on tumblr on a post where people were talking about what would happen if certain letters just stopped existing. I was surprised to find that this concept had already been done and I had to check it…

From the title to the book, this novel literally tells a story of letters. Formatted in an exchange of various letters, letters from the alphabet slowly disappears from the book. As the small town of Nollop begins to lose letters, the…

Welcome to Nollop, a place where the man that invented the sentence "A quick brown fox jumps over a lazy dog" is revered. But as the letters of the sentence fall to the ground, the citizens come to believe it is the direct order of the…

Remember that sentence which contains all the letters of the alphabet: ‘the quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog’? This phrase is crucial to this funny novel told completely in letters mailed between heroine Ella and others, including…

I enjoy words, and have been told before that I speak like a Dawson's Creek native (boy, howdy, knowledge of THAT show certainly dates me). So I loved the sense of fun that the Nollopians have with the written word, even before their…

I've always had a weakness for epistolary novels and Dunn uses them to great effect. He also relishes in language as the citizens of Nollop write in a way that their contemporaries in America have lost. Anyone who has even the slightest…

I had to read this book for school, and personally, I hated it. The story is told by letters that the characters write to eachother, and it got very confusing with so many characters. The whole idea of this society that lives seperate from…

I really couldn't stand the style. personally, I hated how it was written in a series of letters back and forth, and it really got boring after more letters of the alphabet were falling of the the statue. still, very thought provoking and…

A very interesting book. The concept of not being able to use certain letters of the alphabet is definitely thought provoking. What would we do?! But, I felt the characters lacked a little in development, and, at times, I lost track of…
