I just love this book! Alisa's cunning actions and Riden's "mind reading" make this a really enjoyable book.

This is one of my most favorite books. Alosa's sassiness and Riden's cunning actions make this book much more fun to read!

Alosa was a fun, complex character. Her hard work to please her father and her growing appreciation for Riden made for an interesting challenge.

Alosa is a fiery 17-year-old who is the daughter of the Pirate King himself. All her life, she’s been trained by her father mercilessly to be strong enough to do his bidding. When he needs an ancient map that would lead him to limitless treasure, Alosa purposefully gets kidnapped to steal the map for her father. She thinks the crew will be easily fooled by her beautiful appearance but one man is constantly getting in her way, Riden. As the captain’s brother and first mate, Riden intends to follow his orders. However, this new crew member is constantly challenging him, making him curiouser and curiouser. The two grow close and when constant betrayal lurks right around the corner, can they find happiness and freedom. This is one of my favourite pirate-themed novels because of it’s perfect balance of action, romance and fantasy. This novel was extremely fast-paced and each page kept me in suspense. The plot is extremely well constructed to engage the reader and the protagonists are inspirational and likable. The character dynamic between the two love interests are extremely enjoyable to read and they compliment each other nicely. Rating: 5/5. @Iron_Rose of The Hamilton Public Library's Teen Review Board

I had high hopes for this book, but ultimately it fell flat for me. The concept is fun, and of course I'm 100% behind female pirates. But the biggest problem was that the MC has absolutely no weaknesses or vulnerability. Every time something happened to her, she *meant* for it to happen and has carefully arranged things to go that way. It undermined any attempt at tension within the novel, and made the character flat and pointless. Additionally, two-thirds of the way through the novel, things took an abrupt turn and some pretty big plot holes resulted. That turn revealed one weakness/vulnerability of the MC's, but it also gave her nearly unlimited power. I really wish this had more developed character and plot, so that I could enjoy the fun swashbuckling bits without feeling like everything these characters did was pointless. Ah, well.

I absolutely loved this book. Granted, there is a lot more romance than I expected (and I'm not normally big into romance), but it didn't take away from the storyline. I thought all the twists and turns worked nicely, and I found myself loving the tension, along with the adventure. There are paranormal elements that come into play, too, and it was amazingggg.
Definitely recommended to someone looking for a sassy and fun pirate read.
