This is a gorgeous little treasure that works as a wonderful children's book and a beautiful work of art. It marries two of the giants from the worlds of art and literature: Jean-Michel Basquiat and Maya Angelou. Some of his work is paired with Angelou's poem "Life Doesn't Frighten Me." The lyricism and imagery in the poem, "Mean old Mother Goose/Lions on the loose/They don't frighten me at all, Dragons breathing flame/On my counterplane/That doesn't frighten me at all," is rendered in the text as well as Basquiat's expressive illustrations. Pick up this book for a child or adult who wants to know more about these two iconic figures, or who simply yearn for something imaginative and beautiful.

This is a great book for adults and teens who are interested in the poetry of Maya Angelou and the artwork of Jean-Michel Basquiat. But I don't think the message can be comprehended by younger children. Throughout the book, Angelou states that life doesn't frighten her. That's a powerful statement for adults and older kids, but for younger kids, it might set them up for defeat. I'd prefer to read a book to my young child about how life is sometimes frightening, but with courage we can work through it. The biographical information at the back of the book could be helpful for children doing research on either Angelou or Basquiat.
