A timeless classic of First Contact. Read this when it first came out and enjoyed it then, rereading it 20+ years later has not reduced the excellence of the writing one little bit.

Clarke is never going to be known for his complicated, fascinating characters, but his plots are always compelling, imaginative, and unsettling.

Suspenseful throughout. I expected something BIG to happen at the end, but I was disappointed. I will read the sequel.

After reading this I'm not surprised to learn that this won at least 6 book awards. It's a classic, at least if you ask me.
Until humanity actually builds something like "Rama" or something like that pays us a visit for real, this book is like one of those timeless hits that just about anyone can pick up and enjoy.
From the first distant sighting of this bizarre visitor to our Sun, this cylindrical wonder is a mystery. It's soaked with mystery and more mystery saturated with mysterious and sometimes eerie mysteriousness and suspense. Did I mention the mystery?
This had me hooked beginning to end, wanting to know who (or what) the heck built this thing and what it might do next, and what'll happen to the intrepid explorers inside!

416. Rendezvous with Rama (Sequel: Rama II) ---- by Arthur C. Clarke c - 1990. ---- With the Rama story line without a doubt: they must be read in order. ---- I found the tale very reveling of Arthur C. Clarke's talent. With a tale so massive what an art to keep it all bound together. ---- Enjoy!, but don't hurry through the book. ---- RichardPaul ----

This is a great idea and concept hampered by really awful dialogue and characterizations (Clarke's kryptonite, really) and an ending that says, "But wait...there's more!" Really, quite surprising it won a Nebula.
