McGrain has provided a detailed and authoritative reference text -- with exercises -- for the entry-level notation scholar. However, it is sufficiently detailed that it would be a useful reference text for those engaged in music notation even on a regular basis. Clear examples are provided for just about every aspect of notation he discusses; those examples show both the correct usage and the most common incorrect usages. Careful attention to the examples shown would allow even a beginner to produce a clear and accurately notated score.

As noted, it is a basic text. While there are occasional references to notation for multiple instruments, they are few and deal only with the essentials of that practice. Someone needing a reference text dealing with multiple instruments and the variations in notation that calls for might be better off with Gardner Read's "Music Notation -- A Manual of Modern Practice".
