Despite being published in 1939 as a 'road travel guide' this amazing book provides clear insights to the history of the place and the people as you travel along the Oregon Trail from the Missouri River to Astoria. Since this was written before WWII and before the Interstate Highways, some specifics are outdated (eg. fees, accommodations, road conditions) but are fascinating; the stories about the places are accurate and well told up to 1939. Excellent overview on the history of the Oregon Trail including an extensive pre-history--most concise I have read. The place stories include things that were overlooked or white-washed (details of the Mormon Trail, the Chinese, the Basque, etc) as they fit in with the standard and well-known stories were related clearly as facts and without prejudice. Recommend.
