The illustrations and the orange gold palette of this book is so gorgeous I had to look at it several times before I could actually read it. I was shocked this book came out in 2006. I thought surely it was an update. These images of Paris and the style and colours are an homage to children's picture books from the early 1900's. But this artist is entirely authentic, and the update is so fresh! It is a storybook Paris that is captured here. Which is why many, many adults will love it. If you like vintage children's illustrations and or stories, this book is for you!
And the story is very cute, and Simon and Adele are both adorable. The story, too, is a fresh version of the types of stories told at the turn of the century but the dated elements are removed- the morals and fables, etc.
If you are familiar with the Anamaniacs characters Mindy and her dog Buttons, you might see Simon and his sister Adele have the same characters and relationship, but to a much lesser degree. Simon has that same ability to blissfully breeze through his exciting afternoon, not realising the disaster in his wake, and of course, it all works out magically and effortlessly in the end! And the final drawing is a "piece de resistance"!

This delightful story held my children enrapt and produced innumerable giggles as poor Simon continued to lose his belongings. We enjoyed traveling the neighborhoods of Paris with this book, highly recommend it!
