Offered in 0 more formatsWolpert (emeritus, history, U. of California, Los Angeles), who has published extensively on the history of India, has done an admirable job of selecting entries for this 4v reference that reflect the vast and diverse history, politics, people, religions, and culture of India. The entry topics range from contemporary issues such as balance of payments, ballistic missile defenses, the biotechnology revolution, and energy politics and policy to ancient beliefs and practices including Hindu ancestor rituals, early maritime contacts, and rock art. Multiple entries are included for painted miniatures (of various periods and places), political systems, dance forms, monuments, and sculpture. Individual entries are included for India's relation with other countries and many entries are devoted to the beliefs and figures, both heavenly and earthly, associated with India's religions. The volumes are illustrated in b&w, and each volume contains a section of color plates. In addition to the entries from S-Z, v.4 contains a glossary, an annotated bibliography, a very thorough index (104 pages) and a selection of primary sources, including two edicts of King Ashoka, and selections from the autobiography of Mahatma M.K. Gandhi, from Hindu texts, and from the Upanishads. Annotation ©2006 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
