Book News
Aimed at readers in grades nine and up, this encyclopedia compiles the major holidays and festivals of 206 countries, organized alphabetically by country in the first two volumes. The structure of entries consists of basic facts, and information on the origin, history, political system, economy, geography, climate, culture, and cuisine (with some recipes) of each country. This is followed by descriptions and historical information about public, legal, religious, and regional holidays, and dates and places of observance. Also described are rites of passage, such as those related to birth, death, and marriage. Sovereign nations and other international bodies are included, in addition to overseas territories and dependencies, such as Greenland, Bermuda, the Cayman Islands, and French Guiana. The third volume contains overview articles on widely observed holidays internationally, detailing their origins and history, in addition to descriptions of religions. Maps, an explanation of calendar systems, a holiday index, and a comprehensive index are also provided in this volume. Some b&w photos are also included. Dennis teaches history at the U. of Oregon.
