This is a book that covers the History of the Animal Rights movement from the times of Jainism and Buddhism up to the present day's growth in support of vegan diets. The early history involves a lot of discussion of several religions and texts, which is enlightening. It later covers the modern movement, such as Amory Loven's Black Beauty Ranch (Fund for Animals), the Sea Shephard Society with regards to the Canadian seal hunt, and the growing acceptance and respect for vegan lifestyles.
Personally, I disagree with the definition of animal welfare. I view it as a component of animal rights (ie. that most people recognize that animals have the right to a certain level of welfare). Otherwise, the definitions are very well thought out.
