After seeing Martin McDonagh's schlock masterpiece, "Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Mo." and hating it immensely, I came upon his first attempt, "In Bruges". Could this one be as bad as TBOEM? Wrong! It's much, much worse. If you can imagine a Dean Martin / Jerry Lewis crime caper (only slightly) updated for the new Millenium, with Colin Farrell playing the Lewis character, you would be pretty close. On top of that, all the characters spout sub-moronic Catholicism. This would have to be my choice for the worst film of the 21st century (so far.)

Colin Farrell was very good in this and I am glad I watched it.

A dark comedy about two hit men -- one interested, and one uninterested in enjoying a sudden trip to Belgium -- that provokes interesting responses. (See comments below. No, it's not at all about a race war. And the relatively little violence is not excessive, just realistic -- something film goers may not be familiar with.) It is on the art house side, but most people will be swept away by the dialogue, the acting, the outrageous humour, and the surprisingly tense climax. This film magnified my crush on Brendan Gleeson, and even made me start to take Colin Farrell seriously.

Two hit men, one a seasoned veteran and the other a rookie, kill time in picturesque Bruges, Belgium while awaiting their fate and orders from their boss. The movie takes place around Christmas, but it is not a holiday film. I recommend it for fans of gangster/crime movies. It is classified as a comedy, but I didn't think it was a laugh riot. The humor is dark and similar to Pulp Fiction's. All of the performances are good, and it's one of the better films I've seen Colin Farrell in. It is crude at times. In Bruges is rated R for strong bloody violence, pervasive language and some drug use.

What a treat to go slumming with the likes of Fiennes, Gleeson and Farrell. In this gem, all three wonderfully emphasize the "everyman" within their deeply flawed characters. No classic cinema here; the story is boldly absurd, hilarious and touching. I enjoyed it immensely.

Rated 1/10. One of the worst movies I've ever seen.

I didn't expect such a unique story. This was a different type of film for the characters, but if you don't get British film comedy it may not be for you.

Hilarious movie- though be warned it is full of profanity, and the movie is a rather brutal ( at times ) black comedy.

A very tedious film to watch. I heard about this film after coming home from a European vacation and I took a day trip to Bruges on a suggestion from a receptionist at the hostel that I stayed at in Brussels. Bruges is a nice, quaint, cosmopolitan town, yet the film downplays the sophistication of the locals and over-romanticizes the "fairy tale" qualities of the town. Colin Farrell's acting is so painful to watch. I'd suggest watching a documentary on Bruges instead.

Ray: "Why didn't you wave hello to me today when I waved hello to you today?" Jimmy: "I was on a very strong horse tranquilizer today... Wasn't waving hello to anybody. Except... maybe to a horse." Ray: "Huh? What are you talking about?" Jimmy: "Just horsesh*t." Ray: "You from America?" Jimmy: "Yeah. Don't hold it against me." Ray: "Well, that's for me to decide, isn't it? You from America too?" Denise: "No, I'm from Amsterdam." Ray: "Amsterdam! Amsterdam's just a lot of bloody prostitutes, isn't it?" Denise: "Yes, that's why I came to Bruges. I thought I'd get a better price for my p*ssy here." Ray: "Hey? ...You two are weird. Would you like some cocaine?"

Ken: Your girlfriend's very pretty.
Jimmy: She's ain't my girlfriend. She's a prostitute I just picked up.
Ken: I was not aware that there were any prostitutes in Bruges.
Jimmy: You just have to look in the right places... brothels are good.
Ken: Well, you've picked up a very pretty prostitute.
Jimmy: Thank you.

Ken: Coming up?
Ray: What's up there?
Ken: The view.
Ray: The view of what? The view of down here? I can see that down here.
Ken: Ray, you are about the worst tourist in the whole world.
Ray: Ken, I grew up in Dublin. I love Dublin. If I grew up on a farm, and was retarded, Bruges might impress me but I didn't, so it doesn't.

Ray: After I killed him, I dropped the gun in the Thames, washed the residue off me hands in the bathroom of a Burger King, and walked home to await instructions. Shortly thereafter the instructions came through - "Get the f**k out of London, you dumb f**ks. Get to Bruges." I didn't even know where Bruges f**king was.
Ray: It's in Belgium.
