Few music movies do a good job with combining the post-production sound with the visuals on screen, but they didn't even try with this movie. The scene when August sits down to play the piano in the church, the notes you hear go in the opposite direction than they're played by the actor's hand. And then when August is playing guitar in the park with his (unbeknownst to him) father, lead parts start appearing out of nowhere while these two actors only continue to strum and smile at each other.

And none of that helps with the leaps in logic that were too much to swallow, like August knowing how to write complex musical scores seconds after a girl teaches him what lines and spaces mean in reference to the piano (who taught him about accidentals, then? Or keys? Or time signatures? Or timing, for that matter?), or like an inner city pastor walking a young boy up to the front door of Julliard and the boy can just start classes right away. Not to mention the tiring glorification of bad sexual decisions made at parties.

The musical score is dreadful, commercial tripe. The story is only a convincing case for retroactive birth control, or, better yet, just say no. If this is a good picture by today's standards, give me yesterday any old time. The creative team on this one really failed. Miserably.

Very slow beginning. Then a script written by a teenager. Then overly sweet boredom. Then a predictable ending.

From the previous very varied reviews I see this is not a movie for everyone. I would be curious to know the ages of those who loved it and those who truly disliked it. Admittedly it ends looking like a 'Cinderella' story - but this not a bad thing. Our family [kids 10 to 14 in age] enjoyed the story and certainly the music. Robin Williams was at times excellent; at other times "ok." Jonathan Rhys-Meyers continues to impress me in the variety of roles he chooses in movies. Keri Russell - in my view - had a strong presence. However the star is Freddie Highmore. His performance is solid: sad, and amusing at the right moments. So are the other youths. The music never falters. Classical or grunge plays well - together!

A wonderful movie. me & my friends watched it together (4 Times in a weekend) and cried & laughed together at the brilliantly put together scenes. All around, a great movie.

It's so interesting to see such good reviews for a movie which everyone in my house (ages 10, 15, 40'2) found to be boring and trite... didn't even like the music. Almost makes me want to watch it again to look for whatever we missed. aaalmost.
