East Berlin, 1984. Capt. Gerd Wiesler, Stasi officer and surveillance specialist has a simple assignment: keep an eye on Georg Dreyman, a respected playwright, and his actress girlfriend, Christa-Maria Sieland. Though Dreyman is known to associate with blacklisted director Albert Jerska, a known dissident, Dreyman's record is spotless. Wiesler discovers that Minister Hempf has an ulterior motive in spying on this seemingly upright citizen. During the investigation, Wiesler unexpectedly finds himself in sympathy with the people - or at least to this one particular person.

this when filmed must have seemed an 'isn't it awful about them,' tale. but now we are them. or worse. the principles or lack thereof of certain branches of psychology are so easily joined with totalitarianism that it is sickening. Machiavelli aint got nothing on us. to quote Lennon: "...yet you think yer so clever and classless and free..." and we do. we buy into all the symbols of freedom and opportunity; greedily we suck that tit. is it perhaps that each one fears being singled out? For what? But if not by the State, then by whom? could it be that we prey upon each other like this? but what then is the meaning of brotherhood, from sea to shining sea? where can there be danger in being singled out, if not by the wolf pack in one's vicinity. this is not Kipling's wolfpack. not anymore. and the werewolf is revealed to be only a child's nightmare: look, he is alone. nothing to fear from that. it is the fascist pack we should fear. fear the oncoming tide of conformity, for behind it are the slavering canines to enforce it. and, they are not so obvious as to snarl publicly. this film is the realist side of a film like sliver. I repeat, it is not the State we have to fear, it is the wolves among us. to quote Harrison: "( they )will hit you; they will hurt you ... what is more, (they) are not what you are here for." perhaps the best film in the entire catalog.

"The Lives of Others" is an outstanding film. Try to watch it without reading the KCLS website description or the DVD box description. Why ruin one of the best films you will ever see!!

Not as much a movie about government oppression and control as about what it means to be a human being, with a totalitarian state as the setting. The kind of movie you find yourself remembering at odd moments, years after watching it.

Movie really surprised me. It is one of the finest movies I have seen in recent times. Right up there with the like of 'The Spy who Came in from the Cold' and perhaps a notch better due to its intensity, acting and aura of realism. Poignant ending. Give yourself time, don't watch it in a hurry.

Horrifying, gripping and considering that it's a German film one presumes it's pretty close to reality.

Good example of why we should never let government invade our privacy.

Quite dark and suspenseful. It is disturbing to think that people actually had to live in a society where the walls had ears, and their every statement was monitored and recorded. Very intriguing story with very interesting characters.

An excellent exposition of life behind the wall in the DDR. It was much as it was under the Nazis, and subsequently under the USSR.

One of the most haunting of the Cold War's last decade.

"The Lives Of Others" looks at a society where informing on others is a way of life and police have unregulated power.
Now that Harper has proposed and will probably pass into law Bill C 51-"Harper's Police State"-this film is a 'cautionary tale' for Canadians.
