This book is marvelous. I felt like i had met and knew the characters although I had no part in their lives. I now understand the culture of the upper classes and even peasants of that ear. Anna is a woman who defies convention and pays the price. Her relatives and friends and those of her relatives are the characters. I enjoy classics, and this classic took me higher than any other I had read before. The story was enligntening on human emotions, religious and cultural history, and political history of russia of the pre-industrial period. Thank you Tolstoy

I listened to this version while reading the more recent Pevear/Volokhonsky English translation. This version is far more understandable. The sentences read more clearly and the choice of words is cleaner. Phenomenial performance by the reader. A great way to experience this revered classic.
