At his death in 1988, Robert A. Heinlein left a legacy of novels and short stories that almost single-handedly defined modern science fiction. But one of Heinlein's masterpieces was never finished. In 1955, he began work on Variable star, a powerful and passionate tale of two young lovers driven apart by pride, power, and the vastness of interstellar time and space. Then he set it aside to focus on other novellas. The detailed outline and notes he created for this project lay forgotten for decades, only to be rediscovered almost a half century later. Now the Heinlein estate has authorized award-winning author Spider Robinson to expand that outline into a full-length novel. The result is vintage Heinlein, faithful in style and spirit to the Grand Master's original vision.

I was unsure how I would like it. Heinlein's masterpieces like stranger in a strange land, the moon is harsh mistress, and starship troopers are some of my favorite books. The idea of someone else writing for him, even if following an extensive outline, filled me with trepidation.

I am pleased to say that I was pleasantly and deeply surprised. In fact, I would say that it was better than Heinlein in his latest years would have been. This work feels like the Heinlein in his prime.

And for the audio book it is the author who actually provides the narration. This is a nice touch that you don't see often enough. It ensures the intended effect of punctuation and emphasis. Worth the listen. Good sci fi, from the recent past, I was all but convinced such a thing was an urban myth.

A totally, completely, absolutely awesome read. I love Heinlein, and I loved this book.
