McCarty's story can be seen as an updated version of the classic, Harold and the Purple Crayon. Instead of an adventure of sheer creativity, this book focuses on the fact that once an artist has created a work, it is very much out of his control.

One day, young Jeremy uses his fancy pen to draw a big monster. Little does he know that his drawing will turn out to be so pushy and rude! Soon Jeremy is busy sketching whatever the monster demands: a sandwich, a comfortable chair, a TV, a checkerboard, a hat, and more. Finally, the beleaguered boy takes charge -- and draws his unwelcome house guest a one-way bus ticket and a suitcase. Similar to Allan Ahlberg's The Pencil but shorter and less eccentric, this tale of a lonely boy's drawing-come-to-life is empowering, funny, and nicely understated.

Jeremy's new friend the monster is not what he was hoping. He's rude, greedy and demanding. Maybe the kids outside aren't as scary as they seemed...

Ms. White from the Woodstock library reads this book the best.

I really like reading this book out loud. The story of a little boy and his monster always has me in stitches. It reminds me of where the wild things are.

My favourite part of this book is when Jeremy drew a monster and then the monster started bossing him around demanding all sorts of things.

Might be because I'm an adult and too old to completely get the point, but this is another one that just didn't quite do it for me. Illustrations were cute, liked the idea of the "monstrous nuisance", but was just meh in the end.

Jeremy isn't interested in leaving, or doing much. But perhaps this monster might spruce things up.

Lovely illustrations but the story is lacking.
