In this companion book to the HBO series on the war in the Pacific, historian Hugh Ambrose focuses on five American soldiers who each took an active role in the difficult and costly--in terms of lives--campaign to reach the Japanese mainland. Ambrose recounts key battles--Guadalcanal, Midway, Okinawa, and the lesser-known Peleliu--and he provides a soldier's eye view of the events, conveying the great valor and sacrifices of those in uniform.

a well written and researched book on a part of the second world war not widely known to most who study the conflict except those who specialize in the pacific war of 1941-1945

Hard to read .... disjointed, brief short sentences. Gave a lot of print space to equipment problems, aircraft bombing battle "scenes" were scattered with "near misses", naval battles reported as positioning maneuvers versus actual fleet engagements, and ground fighting action lacked any sense of being able to engage the reader. Given the absence of the fighting mans' colorful and expressive vocabulary, it is surprising that the too frequently used expression of "the sh-- hitting the fan" was included at all.
