"Bad Dog describes how Bernese mountain dog Hola joined author Martin Kihn's family as a puppy, intended as a companion to Martin's wife, Gloria (Martin, an alcoholic, had been neglecting her). When it became clear that the growing Hola was unmanageable and potentially dangerous, Gloria left - just when Martin had sobered up with Alcoholics Anonymous. Realising that he needed to get a grip on himself and on Hola, Martin enrolled them both in AKC Canine Good Citizen classes. Martin's account interweaves his efforts to win Gloria back, stay sober, and train Hola, into a hilarious but heartfelt narrative that will have readers cheering for the success of both the Kihns' marriage and Hola's training." Pretty good, actually. The dog mostly isn't as bad as the title would have you believe, except for biting his wife, and the reason for that isn't very clear. But I thought it was interesting, and there is an overview of different ways of teaching dogs to live with us.

Dog owners and recovering alcoholics will enjoy this book. Otherwise, not one of the better dog stories I've read.

The author's honesty about his personal issues and his very keen ability to find a light and quirky humorous touch when talking about his dog, himself and others, make this book a really good read. It's hard to put down and it is not just for dog-lovers/owners. If you enjoy witty writing you'll enjoy the book.

Such a good book for all you dog lover. Hola is your female Marley. Martin is a funny character and brings out the imperfection we all feel at times.
