I found the idea that a youth of almost 18 would be viewed by some characters as a child a little odd, since frontier life must have dictated that childhood would be over long before an 18th birthday. That apart, I enjoyed this effort by a great character actor. The protagonist fuelled by the need for revenge is a bit of a Western cliche, but then westerns (like all genre fiction) thrive on cliche. Well worth a read.

I didn't expect a lot out of this book but I do have to say that Gene Hackman does have a bit of the flair with a pen.

"Payback at Morning Peak" is a typical western that I like to read.
