Sara Douglass writes well, and could probably write better. The story (until you think about it) is interesting, the characters sympathetic, and the plot (at least until it is revealed) provides tension. Unfortunately, when you stop and think about it, not much of it makes a lot of sense. Why can the devil hear but not read? (An illiterate "Old Nick"?) Why doesn't Pengraic sense the thing when he's been in (very) close proximity to it? In the end, there actually seems to be no tension in the story at all. She's had two major, and two minor, love affairs, and, seemingly, could have been happy with any of the four. Big deal! Who cares who she ended up with.
