Levy (1867-1950) was a San Francisco writer best known for her childhood memoir, 920 O'Farrell Street. As an avid art collector of the works of Matisse and Picasso, friend of Alice B. Toklas, and acquaintance of Gertrude Stein, she recounts her encounters with that bohemian circle in early 20th century Paris. From a long hidden manuscript at the University of California, Berkeley library, this petite treasure of a book includes quirky stories, photographs and art images. Well, Harriet does not share my appreciation of Gertrude Stein's writing, which to me is amusing and relaxing. Her memories fill in few of the gaps in my knowledge of the "era," but I'm glad these finally came to light.
