"Liam Connor is an 86-year-old pioneer in the field of nanoscience, working out of Cornell University. His death by apparent suicide is hard for both his granddaughter Maggie and his colleague Jake Sterling to swallow - especially after it becomes clear that he was tortured. It is up to the two of them to determine why Liam was tortured - and what role he played in the use of biological weapons in World War II. Booklist's reviewer called Spiral the "most gripping and engrossing thriller" he's read in 50 years of reading thrillers and praises the author's skill with plot, pace, and characterization, and with his "brief, lucid disquisitions" on science. No wonder it won the ITW Award for Best First Novel in 2012." Thrillers and Suspense November 2013 newsletter http://www.nextreads.com/Display2.aspx?SID=5acc8fc1-4e91-4ebe-906d-f8fc5e82a8e0&N=697347

A great read that really sucks you in. I was impressed by the good descriptions of science that were merged with the good writing style. Look forward to more books by this individual.

This was as good as a pre-apocolyptic, World War II fanatic comes-back-tobite-us-on-the-butt-and-almost-ends-all-life-on-the-planet-as-we-know-it kind of bio-terrorism book as it gets!

Booklist calls this "the most engrossing thriller of the year",and they're right. This is a riveting first novel.

A first novel and must-read thriller by a leading nanoscience researcher and physics professoer at Cornell. Set against a background of cutting- edge science and WWII history that may be unknown to many, it grabs attention from the first page and draws the reader in through its endearing characters. Thought provoking and emotionally intense.
