Cass Neary, an aging punk photographer on the fringes, goes to Scandinavia and then Iceland on an assignment for a reclusive collector and stumbles across murder, intrigue, and an ancient cult. Hand's characters - like the cold, desolate settings - are dark and damaged, but she writes with incredible power, and gives the reader literary noir at its finest. For fans of Andrew Vachss, Steig Larsson, and Tana French.

[I sincerely believe that only an unworldly 12-year-old could find this a good read -- and it's listed as adult fiction.] Christine Perkins, the reviewer for the Library Journal insanely compares the main character to Lisbeth Salander (absolutely no comparison on any level) and the book to Stieg Larsson's "Millennium trilogy" - - utterly absurd! (I'm assuming either the reviewer is completely illiterate or completely nutso?) Being a major fan and positive commenter on Stieg's series (and having met him back in the early 1990s in Europe at an activist gathering concerning human trafficking) such a moronic comparison leaves me cold! Sucks big time is the only apt description for this book, and the main character, an inept dopehead, two-bit thief with no redeeming social characteristics. Didn't care how many sicko pervs got killed, nor what happened to this crankhead thief no one should ever invite into their home!

It is great to read a crime novel/psychological thriller that is outside the stereotypes. Just as the landscape of Iceland darkens, so does the plot. This is an unusual book with a flawed but sympathic main character.

Strangely compelling with a bizarre cast of characters.
