In A Grown-Up Kind of Pretty, Joshilyn Jackson has crafted a winning novel that is, by turns, funny and heart-wrenching. Told alternately through the perspectives of grandmother, mother and daughter (Ginny, Liza and Mosey), the book intertwines contemporary issues (drug use, teen pregnancy, etc.) with the characters' long-ago memories, setting off the whole thing in a lively mystery that begins with the discovery of a baby's bones in the back yard. Jackson's dialogue captures the brisk sassiness that tends to characterize novels about Southerners, and she doesn't shy away from presenting women who are experiencing the real consequences of decisions they've made. A Grown-Up Kind of Pretty is multi-layered and full of lessons about what really represents love and family.
