Opinion

From Library Staff

The Reason why The Woman in Black is so low on my list is because it doesn't really get scary until near the end. However, the build up is portrayed really well. The house looks fantastic and the costumes are great too. It's definitely worth watching to get spooked, even if the only really spooky... Read More »

It seems like Daniel Radcliffe's movie career's #1 goal is proving that he isn't Harry Potter. Not quite as good as Horns, but far more gothic!

I agree with @ledias that it's a shame the movie is not in line with the book. Some things missing out like the beginning Christmas celebration where they gather at the fireplace to share ghost stories. It wasn't all entirely bad of course, just that I wish they would've added MORE to the movie from the book.

The movie really does a good job of recreating the book's haunted house and the horrifying environment. Graphic and vivid images are consistently throw at the young lawyer (Daniel Radcliffe). Daniel is already familiar with ghost and mythical events in Harry Potter, so his performance is very persuading.

Surprised at how much I liked this movie. Not really scary per se, but very creepy. Daniel Radcliffe was very good and was good enough that I didn't think the movie was Harry Potter in a haunted house. Sad story though with good acting, music, and scenes that made me jump. Liked the old-time setting too. Worth watching for sure. Wasn't this movie based on a play? I seem to recall 25 years ago seeing this as a play at the Grand Theatre in London and recall it was a scary play too. But maybe I'm wrong.

Surprisingly, I like it more than "The Amazing Spider-Man", which bored me after 15 min of watching, nothing new, sometimes very boring, I mean spider-man.
"Woman in Black" was keeping my attention and was not boring at all. However, no happy-end :-)

Excellent use of cinematic tricks to create a scary atmosphere--but to no purpose. Daniel Radcliffe can act better than this. The plot is thin and predictable. The ending is ambiguous and not very satisfying.

This is an old-school scary movie - relies on sound effects, dark shadows, pop-up images, etc. But it gets the job done. The overall creepy factor is high, and there were several effective jump-out-of-your-seat scenes. The underlying story, however, is lame and predictable, and the overall storyline was not tied together well. Glad Daniel Radcliff moved on from Harry Potter - here, he plays a dad as a matter of fact. But hopefully, he gets better roles in the future.

Gloomy ghost story with an unexpected twist at the very end:
