Aside from the two author interviews, the rest of this collection largely consists of routine and ponderous essays. The two short stories were trendy for their time in the 1990s, but I found them unsatisfying. The article “Blind Secularism” had an original insight, but when reading the rest of the book, I got that “I’ve heard this all before” feeling. I’m glad I got this book free from the library. This is from a reader who enjoyed Stephenson’s “Baroque Cycle” and who likes his prose style. But compared to Stephenson’s novels, this book lacks heft (both in pages and interest).
