I agree with the comment below. Forget this one. The book is really a lost opportunity though, because the historical detail about life in New Amsterdam is fascinating and realistic, and the main characters (the good ones!) are people you care about immediately. It is just the depraved plot that is sick and unnecessary. I read a lot of murder mysteries, but who needs this one.
Forget this one! You can get better historical fiction about that period in time. This pursues depraved serial murder at a repulsive level.
This novel effectively evokes life in the early days of Manhattan. Little details such as how Broadway got its name adds historical interest, a reflection on the author's background. However, at times I found these historical points, presented in a more academic style, hindered the flow of the story. Still, the book is still worth reading for anyone interested in what life was like in the New World during the late 17th-century.
A thoroughly enjoyable read!! Enough blend of history with good story telling. The reader relates to the characters from the beginnng.
