Want to grow what you eat and eat what you grow? Visit this lively, flourishing school-andcommunity garden and be inspired to cultivate your own.

At an elementary school in Santa Fe, the bell rings for recess and kids fly out the door to check what’s happening in their garden. As the seasons turn, everyone has a part to play in making the garden flourish. From choosing and planting seeds in the spring to releasing butterflies in the summer to harvesting in the fall to protecting the beds for the winter. Even the wiggling worms have a job to do in the compost pile! On special afternoons and weekends, neighborhood folks gather to help out and savor the bounty (fresh toppings for homemade pizza, anyone?). Part celebration, part simple how-to, this close-up look at a vibrant garden and its enthusiastic gardeners is blooming with photos that will have readers ready to roll up their sleeves and dig in.
Back matter includes suggestions for further reading and online resources.

The story of an elementary school garden in Santa Fe, New Mexico. A good choice to read aloud with kids in grades 1 - 3. Great idea to include an horno so cooking can be done in the garden!

A lovely how-to read for anyone, but especially for those who want to plant a garden for the first time, this pictorial is a true description of the gardening success of Acequia Madre Elementary School in New Mexico. Located in Santa Fe, where the temperature averages 34-65 degrees, the area has summer temperatures below 100, but it has a distinct cold winter, ideal for gardening.
The school garden begins as the vision of one person, and continues with teachers guiding the children through lots of learning experiences: composting, planting, gathering, and harvesting rainwater, directing it to an underground cistern which is pumped with electricity from the sun. In addition, the children learn how to make adobe bricks, which are used for the walls of raised gardening beds. Family and community members have opportunities to get involved on special occasions, too.
After harvest, the children and others celebrate by using vegetables to make pizza, and baking it in the garden in the traditional adobe oven.
Ancona captures all of this activity in a short album for all ages.
