Very disappointing since I expected great things from the winner of the nobel prize for literature. Characters are all painted with a depressing tint and their woeful stories do not have even a hint of hope or joy.Could not bring myself to go beyond the first 100 pages.

Saramengo's writing is as lyrical yet sly as usual. Unlike his other books, this one is particularly sad as he describes a life much like the slaves in the American South.

I reallly like Jose Saramago writing, but this novel was very hard for me to get into, I tried on 2 different occasions and the second time I could only through half of the book.
