When a 17-year-old Moldovan boy is found dead on Hampstead Heath, the case falls to DCI Karen Shields and her overstretched Homicide & Serious Crime Unit. Karen knows she needs a result. What she doesn't know is that her new case is tied inextricably to a much larger web of gang warfare and organized crime which infiltrates almost every aspect of London society. Several hundred miles away in Cornwall, Detective Inspector Trevor Cordon is stirred from his day-to-day duties by another tragic London fatality. Traveling to the capital and determined to establish the cause of death and trace the deceased's daughter, Cordon becomes entangled in a complicated situation of his own. A situation much closer to Karen's case than either of them will ever know.

Harvey has again written an excellent book I just wish he had not thought it necessary to use the F word six time on every other page. It seems that every character uses the word as part of their conversations. In reality people only use the F word on such a continual basis when they don't have brains to do otherwise. I also question why Harvey felt the need to throw in a total unnecessary one night stand lesbian incounter. All his other books stand up well, perhaps he thought that in 2012 it was necessary for the book to be a success. It's a shame because the story is very good and holds your attention right to the end and I did try to ignore the language but it was irritating.

Harvey is an old pro and a good writer and this novel does not disappoint. It is an excellent example of the British police procedural, featuring 2 cops: a harried, hardworking upwardly mobile black woman detective in London, and a middle aged male detective in Cornwall whose career has long ago stopped advancing. A fairly complex plot unfolds credibly, at an unhurried but reasonably quick pace. The reader's attention doesn't stray. Good stuff.
