Meet the fabulously dysfunctional Gallagher family. Dad's a drunk, Mom split long ago, eldest daughter Fiona tries to hold the family together. Eldest son Philip (Lip) trades his physics tutoring skills for sexual favors from neighborhood girls. Middle son Ian is gay. Youngest daughter Debbie is stealing money from her UNICEF collection. Ten-year-old Carl is a budding sociopath and an arsonist, and toddler Liam is, well, he might actually be black, but nobody has a clue how.

SHAMELESS requires a certain Elizabethan dramatic suspension of disbelief. For how else to explain Frank Gallagher's (William Macy) CrossFit perfect physique, his beautiful longhair, his electric facility with language, his ceaseless virility? He is supposed to be a swindling, abusive middle-age alcoholic. It makes no sense unless Frank Gallagher is actually the Earl of Oxford slumming on the Southside of Chicago. A real-life Frank Gallagher would be bloated, boring, impotent, with a fatty liver and delirious with alcohol-induced psychosis. Nonetheless the show works, and works well.

This is what entertainment is all about! The acting is excellent; William Macy is perfect as the self absorbed dysfunctional daddy of the bunch. So nice that it is unrated and doesn't have to conform to some prude's churchgoing idea of right and wrong. Emma Kenney as "Debbie" reminds one of Lauren Hulsey (Little Chrissy ) in Pecker (John Waters) Belly laughs galore!

A roller-coaster ride of a family comedy/drama! I love the Gallaghers, their circle of friends, and even the appalling choices they make while trying to get by in life. It is graphic to say the least, and leaves you fearing for our future, but hopeful that despite their lack of "traditional values" this family's brilliance, ingenuity, and love for each other is enough to pull us all through.

It gets better: the first few episodes left me unimpressed and fast forwarding, but William H. Macy is always interesting to watch, as is Joan Cusack.
Just keep in mind, this is a comedy-drama: everyone has to be "likable," there's a certain amount of preachiness, and the rough edges of poverty and alcohol abuse are smoothed out in favor of slick resolutions. --
Here begins Ian & Mickey's gay relationship (the best thing since Brendan Brady & Ste Hay), but it's also notable that the gay sex-scenes are much less frank than the hetero ones.
P.S. Annoying product-placements.

This show is awesome. It may be a little over the top but it shows humanity in a new, hilarious light.

This is truly shameless, but I love the Gallaghers.

This has to be one of the greatest shows on television.
Perhaps it is not as popular with most people because they don't have Showtime or maybe it's simply because they can't stomach the situations the characters get in. Watch it and see how the characters manage to show sleazy, awful sides to their personalities THEN turn it around and show compassion and understanding. Gee, JUST like "Real" people. Ian, for me, is the stand out. He is gay and dispels ALL of the gay stereotypes. I'm gay, and I think his character is as close to MY reality as it can get on television. "Will and Grace" is funny and cute, but Ian and Mickey on this show are using a sleadge hammer to break the stereotypes and assumptions. I say LONG LIVE Shameless and the crazy, bizarre, sleazy, lovely, heartwarming situations! Debbie for President and Ian for Vice President! Watch the show and see what I mean! PLease watch it!

Great acting, realistic sets, off the wall situations, black black warped humour. I love this show! I was not aware that it was a rip off of an original British series until recently, so I lived in a rose coloured world, where I thought the Americans had actually come up with a true original! In spite of the fact that it is a copy of a British series, I really enjoy the acting and the character development.

Saw the original British version first and same-old same-old satirical farce on social issues of broken families.

This is my first comment on anything. Shameless is about a poor dysfunctional family in the south side of Chicago. It's crude sometimes perverse humor balance out what is the best and most realistic drama on television to date. It must be noted that while the show is rated MA, it has a realism I have yet to seen in any family drama on television. I personally found myself rooting for Gallagher clan through the three seasons I have watched and felt thier heart break as things went south for them. I would highly recomomend this show to anyone who is looking for a more hard hitting realistic family dramady. But of course I must warn you that the humor is not only crude but dark in way that only comes from the harshness of the real world.

Fiona Gallagher: You know, for a guy who just got engaged, you don't seem very happy to be getting married.
Kev: It's 'cause I'm already married.

Steve: Do you know why doctors, lawyers and nurses are great liars?
Debbie Gallagher: No.
Steve: Because they lie to help people. Like, a doctor wouldn't tell a sick patient, "Too bad, you're gonna die." He would say, "We're doing everything we can." Wouldn't he?
Debbie Gallagher: Yeah?
Steve: So, pretend you're being a doctor today and tell a doctor's kind of lie. Can you be a doctor for me?
Debbie Gallagher: Can I be a nurse?
Steve: That's my girl.
