Wark (liberal studies, New School) explores the post-60s legacy of the French radical agitprop group, The Situationists. He focuses on their work making sense of "the spectacle" and how alienation is intensified and "integrated" in commodity society. Many of the chapters are relatively self-contained monographs on one Situationist project or preoccupation or another. He looks at contesting political aesthetics, détournement as utopia, how the State became occulted from even its leaders, the bungled opportunities of France's 1968 protests, and more, linking the strategies that Situationists developed in the 20th century to more contemporary aims at disintegrating the spectacle and revealing the true contours of social reality. The book offers a creative jacket design by Kevin Pyle, which unfolds and turns into a small poster with a comic-like survey of the sentiments surrounding Paris in 1968.
