My Favorite Books This Year All fiction books below are mysteries (and probably part of a series) except where described as something else. I really, really enjoyed all of these books, and hope that you may find something you like among them. This one of my favorite things to share at the end of the year and the beginning of the new one. Anne Hillerman does a nice job in continuing her farher's characters. Special attention to New Mexico setting -- you can really feel the desert heat and the endless miles driven during the investigations.

she's no Tony Hillerman who used the landscape and mythology and way of the Dineh as characters in his stories. This is a mere police procedural set on the navaho reservation. Wuite disappointing as a follow up to her father. I'l try one more but not impressed.

The first book in the Leaphorn, Chee and Manuelito series

Please ignore the misogynists who refused to read this book. Hillerman has her own voice and her own perspective. She didn't mimic her father's work, she is just allowing the character to live on. It is not at all surprising that the narrator has a new voice, nor that the central character is a woman. It you just have to have all your books be about men, and the women they conquer, find something else. This book is still honoring the Navajo way of life including the place of women before the white people's near genocide of the people. It is not a rant against white people, but it does not pull any punches when saying how life on the reservation actually is.

Continuation of her father's, Tony Hillerman's , characters. Excellent Anyone who likes the Hillerman books will also enjoy the series by Margaret Coel

I'm glad Leaphorn and Chee- and Bernie and the rest- will continue. There may never be another Tony Hillerman, but his daughter has done a more than credible job in re-starting the series, and I look forward to more to come.

She is not as good a writer as her father was, but she does keep the plot interesting and her descriptions of New Mexico and the Navajo reservation are good. I like her choice of Bernie as the main character in this one.

Best-seller Tony Hillerman's daughter continues his Chee/Leaphorn/Manualito series in this rich, suspenseful tale. Her take, mostly through Bernie's eyes, isn't the same as her father's, which I think is fine. Police work has changed since her father began his writings. I never pay too much attention to whodunit, anyway, unless I can figure it out in the first chapter, and I didn't, so that didn't bother me. I'm interested in how the characters figure it out.

If you enjoyed Tony Hillerman's books, you will enjoy Anne's. Full of Navajo culture but from a woman's side this time, I found myself looking up Navaho rug weaving, Chaco Canyon pottery, as well as numerous other items I discovered in this book.

I'm so thankful for Anne Hillerman! I have been missing the Tony Hillerman characters and you can only reread books so many times. She carries on quite satisfyingly and I look forward to her next installment.

"At this morning's meeting, did Leaphorn seem worried about anything?" Cordova asked.

You can't shoot Joe Leaphorn and try to fry up a couple more cops without getting some attention.
