Our first glimpse of Marie is as a child: a girl in glasses waiting on a Brooklyn stoop for her beloved father to come home from work. The moves on to Marie's first heartbreak and her eventual marriage; her brother's brief stint as a Catholic priest, subsequent loss of faith, and eventual breakdown; the Second World War; her parents' deaths; the births and lives of Marie's children; the changing world of her Irish-American enclave in Brooklyn.

This is my second book by McD. I found this one easier to like, understand & relate with. She does labor over details, however, the details are so like a painting for the mind's eye. When she writes about the wake, I can see it. As for the wake I've known about for ages, I never fully understood the process or the reasons - eat the grief before it eats you.

I can understand how many might find her style tedious & give up. Just how accurate she describes the life of the Irish in communities like Boston (or other cities) I can only leave to those who have experience, but I'd guess she is very accurate.

Strange how I also listened to Saints for All Occasions & received a full dose of Irish life in US cities.
