Opinion

From Library Staff

Rupert Grint has been a bit more elusive in the movie world compared to his co-stars, but here's one of his more well-known movies.

This film reminded me of a Korean film "JSA". ...a story of North and South Koreans caught up in a murder situation on the border bridge and how the two sides interacted, changed, and then eventually had to tell their own sides of the story. Although this film was more of a campy and likeable group of men who overcame orders from above in order to survive, it still has the same feel to it. Both films are worth your watch.

Very believable. Humanity between opposing sides during war time. Soldiers face to face in a cabin.

This is a 2012 war-time survival drama directed by Petter Næss, loosely based on real-life events that occurred in Norway during the Second World War.
On 27 April 1940, a Luftwaffe Heinkel bomber is shot down near Grotli by a Fleet Air Arm Blackburn Skua fighter.
Three of the German crew are survivors (pilot Leutnant Horst Schopis, Unteroffizier Josef Schwartz and Feldwebel Wolfgang Strunk) set off looking for shelter.
Likewise, two British survivors from the aircraft that crash-landed near the same location look for shelter.
When Captain Charles Davenport and his air gunner Robert Smith meet up with the German crew, they find out that they all can share the same abandoned Norwegian cabin, despite an uneasy armed standoff.
In order to survive the harsh Norwegian winter, the German and British crew members have to learn to cooperate and an unlikely friendship blossoms between the survivors.
It is a heart-warming, inspirational and thought-provoking anti-war docu-drama.

Based on an actual story, director Peter Næss’ beautifully shot anti-war flick only occasionally succumbs to the usual Hollywood-style genre clichés with one charmingly English chappy cracking jokes while the obsessively anal Jerry commander draws a charcoal line down the centre of the cabin to impress upon his amused POWs where “British Territory” ends and German land begins. But as relationships thaw between bowls of moss soup and trips to the open air outhouse (its roof and sides sacrificed for firewood) a common sense of humanity emerges highlighted by a succession of scenes both dramatic and comedic: the man gather gravely around a freshly killed rabbit unsure as to how prepare it for the frying pan; they band together to save the life of an injured airman; and the two commanding officers find themselves literally holding up the roof. And then the Norwegian armed forces arrive and the realities of war return with a vengeance. As Næss plays with the balance of power between his antagonists he leaves us with one lasting image that stands out above all the others—sworn enemies standing beneath a magnificent aurora display crooning a ragtag rendition of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow”. If only it had been that easy…

IF YOU LIKE SNOW YOU WILL LIKE THIS. I ALWAYS PREFER TRUE STORIES. I AM GLAD THEY SHOWED AT THE END WHAT HAPPENED TO THE SURVIVORS.
THAT CABIN HAD TO BE COLD. I THOUGHT DRESSING FOR A DINNER OF OATMEAL WAS EXAGGERATED WHEN THE REMOVED THEIR WARM CLOTHING. IT'S A MIRACLE THEY WERE RESCUED.

Surprisingly touching without being heavy handed. Be sure to see the conclusion to find out how real life ultimately played out.
