The second in a series of the "alienist" doctor and his band of NYC crime fights of the late 1800's. A bit preposterous at moments, but a delicious read just the same. I enjoy an easy read now and then...sheer entertainment, and lots of chuckles.

Another adventure with the same characters as Carr's earlier novel "The alienist" but somehow I found this one more accessible. It's told from the point of view of Stevie the doctor's assistant and intrepid carriage driver. It's fun to follow the investigation in this era before fingerprinting was accepted and forensics, criminal profiling and ballistics were sciences still in their infancies.

Dr. Laszlo Kreizler and his team are back in a case that proves to be as mystifying and macabre as before. Kreizler, a child psychologist who is dealing with a police investigation into a child's death at his institute, agrees to investigate the abduction of the daughter of the Spanish consulate official in broad daylight. The trail leads to a woman named Libby Hatch, who has a shadowy past full of manipulation and murder. The story culminates in a courtroom in upstate New York, with Libby Hatch being defended by the famous lawyer Clarence Darrow, and where Kreizler must confront his significant doubts about himself in order to bring Libby to justice. This sequel to the Alienist is told through the eyes of Stevie, one of Kreizler's assistants: a new perspective that allows the returning characters to remain fresh and vibrant.
