Ella has the “gift of obedience” which means she will do anything she is told. Set against a tapestry of ogres, giants, and gnomes, we follow Ella on her quest to find out who she really is. (NOTHING LIKE THE MOVIE)

I really really love this book! This is one of my favourite books, and I never get tired of reading it. I would give it all five stars, but I feel like the romance between Ella and Char could be developed further, since the romance seems a bit rushed near the end. However, the author illustrates Ella's struggles really well.

This is a great book. I have read it about three times. At some parts I was almost crying, but the ending is very happy. I was sad that I finished it. But I can read it over if I want to.

4 Stars - I recommend if you are looking for a middle-grade fairy tale retelling with an imagination, a and a strong female lead.

Ella is cursed. She was made to be obedient from birth, and now does whatever she is told to do. Her goal in life is to get the fairy who cursed her, Lucinda, to remove her "gift" of obedience. When Ella's mother dies, her father sends her to finishing school where her "gift" is discovered and exploited. Ella runs away in the hopes of finding the fairy Lucinda and finally gaining her freedom. Along the way she runs into her old friend Prince Char. When her father marries Dame Olga and leaves the estate Dame Olga and her mean daughters turn Ella into a servant who must do their bidding. Oh, and Ella can't marry Prince Char because she could put him in danger with her gift. How can she break the curse?

I re-read this book because I won a copy of the prequel, Ogre Enchanted, via Goodreads and Harper Collins Children. It had been at least 15 years since I've read the original book, and I wanted a refresher. I'm glad I got a chance to re-read this as an adult. I know that I loved it as a child! I feel like an awful lot is packed into a short book, but that could be a middle-grade trait. However, I loved the creative twist on Cinderella, the magical world that Levine built, and the strong-willed, brave character she created in Ella. I definitely recommend this if you haven't read it before, or if you have elementary aged children.

This re-told story changed my life - it's a book that turned me into a reader with its strong independent female characters and entrancing re-telling of Cinderella. I honestly never would have turned to a life of reading without this intelligent, heart-melting, humorous book. It taught me to be kind, adventurous, and even now as an adult - I find myself reading it every year with a new perspective taking a way new lessons. I highly recommend this book, it teaches you to be a fighter against the odds and that's what everyone need a little bit of.

This is one of my favorite books! So far I've read it twice, but I intend to read it more in the future! The book is WAY better than the movie. Don't get me wrong, the movie is GREAT, but it dosn't really stick to the plot line of this book. I highly suggest this!

A childhood favorite of mine. Ella Enchanted has enchanted my family's library for years and years. (Pun intended)
It's a VERY good book, and while the movie is also good too (in a weird/funny way) there is so much more you can learn by actually reading it.

Ella Enchanted, a book written by Gail Carson Levine, is a great book that the movie does not do justice to. When Ella is born a fairy gives her the "gift" of obedience. I say "gift" because it meant she would be always forced to obey anything anyone would tell her to do. Her mother has died and her father, not knowing about the curse, is strict and eventually remarries another woman with two daughters. There is much more tp the story, but to find out you'll have to read it. I like the part about the curse because it explains why she would have to work for them and do whatever they say. (5 out of 5 stars)

I’ll get this out of the way first: Ella Enchanted is a little dated, especially regarding gender roles. And on a slightly different note, for a Cinderella re-telling, I wanted not only the plot to be remixed, but the power structures as well. HOWEVER, Ella Enchanted is worth reading, especially for readers looking for a book with a dynamic, well-thought-out, lived-in world. I especially enjoyed Levine’s ogres, who can read minds, and the giants, who, in a nice twist, are not evil, but in fact well-mannered, thoughtful creatures.

The crux of the plot revolves around Ella. As she puts it on the novel’s very first page, “That fool of a fairy Lucinda did not intend to lay a curse on me. She meant to bestow a gift. When I cried inconsolably through my first hour of life, my tears were her inspiration. Shaking her head sympathetically…the fairy touched my nose. ‘My gift is obedience. Ella will always be obedient.’”

This “gift” raises obvious problems for Ella. She tries to keep her curse a secret, however it inevitably becomes known to several not-so-nice characters, seriously hindering Ella’s home, social and love life. Her step-sisters, especially Hattie, are two of the most evil characters I have ever encountered in any book. Ella, on the other hand, is a plucky, resourceful character few readers will have a hard time rooting for.

From start to finish, Ella Enchanted is a consuming read. Even the more problematic elements are good starting points for fruitful discussions about relationships, romance, love, consent, and even social hierarchies. Why does everyone want to marry the prince? Why exactly is Ella so appealing to him? And what of the ending? Are we happy with it?

Get in your nearest pumpkin coach and come check out this book (unless, Ella, you don’t want to – this isn’t an order).

A cute little fairy tale, a retelling of one of the classics with a few new twists.

I haven't seen the 2004 movie with the same title, but from what I've read and seen online, although it's based on the book, it's quite a bit different. So, if you've seen the movie, read the book for a story that's a bit more like a classic fairy tale!

This book is awesome! Very well written and great for all ages.
I recommend that if you have read the book and loved it, don't watch the movie, the movie does NOT follow the book accurately.

From behind me, Hattie shrilled, "Go to your room this instant. I command you."
I ignored her, but Char pulled away.
"Why won't you marry me? Why not, if you love me?"
"I'm cursed. You wouldn't be safe if I were your wife." What was I saying? I hadn't told anyone about the curse since I was eight. Mother had forbidden it. Had someone told me to?
No one had. Then why....
My thoughts wouldn't settle.

"The meaning, mama is that Ella does whatever she is told.I don't know why, but she does."
" Really?"
Hattie nodded.
" You mean she would have listened to me too?" Olive said.
" Clap your hands three times Ella." Mum Olga commanded. I clutched my skirt and stiffened my hands at my side.
" It will take a moment." Hattie said. "She tries not to. See how red her face is?"
I clapped.

Dear Ella,
Impatience is not usually my weakness. But your letters torment me. They are playful, interesting, thoughtful, and (occasionally) serious. I'm overjoyed to receive them, yet they bring misery. What I really long to know you do not tell: what you feel, although I've given you hints by the score of my regard. You like me. You wouldn't waste time or paper on a being you didn't like. But I think I've loved you since we met at your mother's funeral. I want to be with you forever and beyond, but you write that you are too young to marry or too old or too short or too hungry. You would charm Father, and Mother too. They would be yours completely. What a beautiful bride you'll be, whomever you marry at whatever age. Today I cannot write of Ayortha or my doings or anything. I can only post this and wait. Love (it is such a relief to pen the word!), love, love-- Char
