Based on the true story of Solomon Northup. It is 1841, and Northup, an accomplished, free citizen of New York, is kidnapped and sold into slavery. Stripped of his identity and deprived of all dignity, Northup is ultimately purchased by ruthless plantation owner Edwin Epps and must find the strength within to survive. Filled with powerful performances by an astonishing cast including Chiwetel Ejiofor, Michael Fassbener, Benedict Cumberbatch, Brad Pitt, and newcomer Lupita Nyong'o, 12 Years a Slave is both an unflinching account of slavery in American history and a celebration of the indomitable power of hope.

Opinion

From Library Staff

Lupita Nyong'o won an Academy Award for her performance. In The Force Awakens, she'll portray a pirate named Maz Kanata and probably not win another award. But she did get in Vanity Fair with little white dots all over her face to do the motion-capture acting.

The movie is well-acted, and conveys the brutality of plantation life, while showing the human qualities of the people Solomon Northrup knew. If you are alive today, this movie will best convey the conditions and attitudes of Antebellum America, for modern audiences.

Highly recommended. Devastating and eloquent. I saw this twice in the theater.

The subject matter is an important, yet shameful part of American history, so I wanted to like this movie. But I found it long and dull. I ended up fast forwarding through the last quarter of the movie.

This is an incredibly difficult movie to watch. We cannot discuss American history or worry about 'Making America Great Again' if slavery is part of American history. This movie proves that America was never great for many in this country.

So, I liked the movie. It was moving, it was a well produced, but that's all I got from it: a movie about slavery, not much "deeper meaning". To me, the movie seemed sugarcoated to the reality of slavery.

I won't say it's a must see, but it was good nonetheless.

This is a historical docudrama directed by Steve McQueen (not to be confused with the famous actor who died in 1980), based on the 1853 slave narrative memoir "Twelve Years a Slave" by Solomon Northup---a New York State-born free African-American man who was kidnapped in Washington, D.C. in 1841 and sold into slavery.
It is one of the most powerful, heart-breaking and emotional anti-racism, anti-slavery and human rights movies.

Overhyped beyond compare, 12 YEARS A SLAVE didn't deserve, in my opinion, the Best Picture Oscar. I don't mean to detract from Solomon Northup's story, as it deserves to be told (and Patsy's story, too), but it's not the most haunting and meaningful depiction I've ever seen; ROOTS was. ROOTS is over three decades old, yet it encapsulated more about the unjust experiences of real flesh-and-blood slaves than anything I've ever seen. The strength of the human spirit to not just survive but thrive has never been portrayed more vividly to me than ROOTS did. I'm sorry to say it, but I don't think Steve McQueen's film will stand the test of time. It didn't add anything to the conversation. Personally, I don't recommend it; for an indictment and greater understanding of slavery, I highly recommend ROOTS instead.

HEARTBREAKING!! As a member of former slaves, this is all too true. It's not just "a bad thing that happened in our history" it is something that still torments families and generations of black people in our country. Please know that this is important history in learning love, loss, but most of all about community and how we are the ones that shape our future for better or for worse we must take good care of one another.

from IMDb: Bass: The law says you have the right to hold a xyzger, but begging the law's pardon... it lies. Is everything right because the law allows it? Suppose they'd pass a law taking away your liberty and making you a slave?

Edwin Epps: Ha!

Bass: Suppose!

Edwin Epps: That ain't a supposable case.

Bass: Because the law states that your liberties are undeniable? Because society deems it so? Laws change. Social systems crumble. Universal truths are constant. It is a fact, it is a plain fact that what is true and right is true and right for all. White and black alike.
