Written to commemorate the Bicentennial in 1976, James A. Michener's magnificent saga of the West is an enthralling celebration of the frontier. Brimming with the glory of America's past, the story of Colorado--the Centennial State--is manifested through its people: Lame Beaver, the Arapaho chieftain and warrior, and his Comanche and Pawnee enemies; Levi Zendt, fleeing with his child bride from the Amish country; the cowboy, Jim Lloyd, who falls in love with a wealthy and cultured Englishwoman, Charlotte Seccombe. 900 page historical novel that changes the names of the major characters/places in history so you have to figure out for yourself who/what the hell this is all about. And the book is a musical also with people bursting into song all through the novel which interrupts the flow (like a Pynchon novel). And the final chapter turns into a maudlin love story? This book could have been much better and didn't need to be so long. Some elaborations go too far. It's a good book I read as more of a challenge to prove people in this day and age still read long novels. Old people have for years acted superior for reading Michener. Big Whoop. I'm interested in past events of the world therefore I am(stupid). This novel took me three weeks to finish. Plodding, relentless, boring, and when it's all over you wonder if you comprehended anything or could have been more thorough. A bit like life.
