Historical fiction set in the mountains of North Carolina in the 1920s, this story is told through a series of letters protagonist Arie writes to her cousin in far-off Raleigh. The author incorporates dialect into the story without getting too annoying or overdoing it, and the novel is a great coming-of-age tale. It addresses issues of poverty and city v. country, and while this isn't earth-shattering stuff, it's well-written and would be a good suggestion for kids looking for historical fiction for this time period, especially if interested in more of a slice-of-life as opposed to important events.
