I think this is the first in the Saxon series which I've greatly enjoyed in print - now I'll revisit with audio. Except any that David Case reads - just cannot abide that reader.

Why do we not have the complete works of Bernard Cornwell on downloadable audio books?
His stories are both captivating and educational. Please consider ordering the several Series that he wrote, The Sharpe Series, The Viking Series, The Archer Series, and the Saxon Series. He also wrote a series about the US Civil War, sorry I don't recall the name.
Thanks for your consideration of this comment and suggestion.

This is a very exciting & realistic historical novel of the times of Alfred the Great beginning from 866 to 877 as seen through the eyes and mind of Uhtred son of Uhtred of Bebbanburg. As with the best of historical fiction, the author has well researched the historical material, paints pictures of the notable historical characters, but uses his imaginative speculation to provide a more complete description of the life of a Saxon living at this time. He chooses as the hero of the story the boy Uhtred who is captured by the invading Danes after having watched as his family is wiped out and his inheritance lost. This allows the author to sympathetically describe the Danes and their culture, politics, and aspirations. Later Uhtred enters the service of Alfred. King Alfred's situation and methods to deal with his situation are puzzled out by Uhtred with growing but grudging respect as Uhtred matures to become a husband, father, and a warrior. The author has an engaging writing style that places the reader in the middle of the battle with shield wall facing shield wall or some other situation. The audio rendition really adds to the tone and color to the story.
