Leo is a letter carrier in a small (I believe it to be Italy) village. He delivers letters and packages of all kinds but has never received any for himself. One day he finds a bird in a mailbox that got left behind when the flock went south for the winter. Leo brings Cheep home and takes care of him. They become a family over the winter. But when spring comes, it is time for Cheep to fly with his flock again. Leo is sad to see him go, but goes back to his regular life and then what he really wants happens...he receives his first letter.

The illustrations have a vintage feel to them due their muted colors. There is plenty of detail with lots to look at on each page.

This is a simply told story about a letter carrier and what he wants most, but gets the added benefit of a new friend. There is a sprinkling of light humor throughout such as when Leo delivers a box of what looks like fishhooks to the fish family (what?!), pigs flying through the snow, and the bird language Cheep writes his letter in. This is a cute story that even the littlest ones will enjoy. Recommend for ages 3-7.
