When one of his wife's Paola's students comes to visit him, with a strange and vague interest in investigating the possibility of a pardon for a crime committed by her grandfather many years ago, Commissario Brunetti thinks little of it. But when the girl is found dead, clearly stabbed to death, Claudia Leonardo suddenly becomes Brunetti's case, no longer Paola's student.

Claudia, one of Brunetti's wife's best students, asks him what it would take to get a pardon for a long-ago crime. She's unwilling to tell him much, and he forgets it. Until, that is, she's murdered. Brunetti can't resist following up, especially when an art dealer is murdered. Claudia's grandfather had been involved with art, so Brunetti suspects a connection. She spoke of her grandmother, but didn't give her name, so the case is convoluted. Eventually he finds her--and a huge collection of art stolen by the Nazis. No one wants this subject discussed, and statutes of limitations have run out. But Brunetti's sense of honor keep him involved. Another great page turner. Also another development in the relationship between Brunetti and his sidekick.

recommended by Jane Qunin. Not bad for a mystery, but not enough to convert me
