I loved this book even more than the first. I love how science and natural history are woven into the story in meaningful ways, how it follows a historical timeline and makes the events and characters feel real and sympathetic. You can learn so much without feeling like you're learning or being lectured at because you're so busy enjoying the adventure and journey with the main character. I love Callie - she is an awesome heroine and role model with indomitable curiosity and a keen awareness of the world; she gets into tremendous scrapes but always finds herself stronger for it. The ending was entirely satisfying; it gave real closure. I hope there will be more books to come in this series.

"Am I not as smart as my brothers? The answer was no. No I was not.
I was smarter.
And if I had to make my own way in this world, so be it. I would find that way"
