"Whom to marry, and when will it happen-these two questions define every woman's existence." So begins a revelatory and slyly erudite look at the pleasures and possibilities of remaining single. Using her own experiences as a starting point, journalist and cultural critic Kate Bolick invites us into her carefully considered, passionately lived life, weaving together the past and present to examine why- she-along with over 100 million American women, whose ranks keep growing-remains unmarried.

I adore this book. I have the ARC and the hard back, and I'm currently listening to it on audio book.

It's so refreshing to know that there are heterosexual women who don't seek marriage and family, who are willing to choose a life of solitude and singleness so they don't dissipate their energies on things other than their work and/or their art. She makes it very plain that men of course get to "have it all," mainly because he has a wife at home to take care of everything outside of his other ambitions. But for a woman to "have it all," she has to DO it all and most often without help.

I hope that young women will discover this book and find it a useful guide to contentment and success in singlehood. SPINSTER need not be a dirty word.
