“Welcome to the best of the best.” — New York Daily News Books Blog

The stories in this 100th installment of The Best American Short Stories will be selected by award-winning and best-selling author T. C. Boyle. A master storyteller with a delightfully subversive streak, Boyle mixes “brilliance with high-concept pyrotechnics, meditations with whiz-bangery” (Los Angeles Times) and he is “always enjoyable, virtually incapable of dullness” (New York Times Book Review).

Award-winning and best-selling author T.C. Boyle guest edits this year’s The Best American Short Stories, the premier annual showcase for the country's finest short fiction.

I just didn't "get" most of these stories. Of the few I could make sense of, there were even fewer I thought were any good. If this is the "best" of 2015, it must have been an extremely lean year in the literary world. The moral: sticking a label on a sow's ear does not a silk purse make. Oink, oink.

If you like T.C. Boyle, and I generally do, you'll like most of this collection. There are enough stories here to make it worth checking out but be prepared to skip a few. One unequivocal feature: the quality of the writing is top notch even if some of the stories aren't to everyone's tastes.

If these are the best short stories America has to offer, then there's something wrong with fiction writers in this country.
