NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY NPR BuzzFeed Tor.com BookPage Library Journal Publishers Weekly ђ́Ø Naomi Novik, author of the New York Times bestselling and critically acclaimed Temeraire novels, introduces a bold new world rooted in folk stories and legends, as elemental as a Grimm fairy tale."Uprooted is confidently wrought and sympathetically cast. I might even call it bewitching."ђ́ؤGregory Maguire, bestselling author of Wicked and Egg & Spoon "Our Dragon doesn't eat the girls he takes, no matter what stories they tell outside our valley. We hear them sometimes, from travelers passing through. They talk as though we were doing human sacrifice, and he were a real dragon. Of course that's not true: he may be a wizard and immortal, but he's still a man, and our fathers would band together and kill him if he wanted to eat one of us every ten years. He protects us against the Wood, and...

Spellbinding Fantasy

Uprooted by Naomi Novik is one of those standalone fantasy stories you wish there was more of. Young Agnieszka lives in a village near an evil Wood that only exists to spread its dark corruption and send monsters out into the world. A wizard named the Dragon protects the valley from the Wood, but in exchange he takes one girl from the village every ten years. Agnieszka is sure that her… (more)

It's rare that I can find a book that combines so many elements I like -- fantasy, romance, fairy tales, female Bildungsroman, and magical worldbuilding, in this case. And if you're into audiobooks, it's read by someone with the absolute perfect accent and tone of voice.

Unfortunately the narration of the audiobook was just awful thus further ruining an already weak story line. No character development with unrealistic interactions and reactions to scenarios. I liked the fun/fantasy aspects but they could have been so much more if the writing were stronger.

World creation, epic battles, and travel adventures all in one book instead of a long series. Magical realism mixed with fairy tale is a bit dark at times but with a happy ending. Caution not for children: violence and descriptive sex, separately.

I dont understand why its necessary to read certain books in an accent? Is it supposed to add authenticity? I dont know if this narrator really does have an accent or faked one, but either was it was annoying and I did not enjoy. I would say it deterred from my experience, not enhanced it.

I am enjoying the book, but I am annoyed by the reader. The accent which she assumes is fine, but the halting nature of her reading puts me a little in mind of Shatner ...

This is a fairy tale. Not an updated fairy tale, but an older, darker sort of fairy tale. The audiobook version is excellent, deeply atmospheric. A bit overwrought at moments and perhaps a little over-long. But really a terrific listen.

When Agnieszka is mysteriously chosen over her friend Kasia to become the next servant to the Dragon, a wizard who protects their valley from the evil Wood, she begins to understand that maybe she was different all along. This book was very action-packed with lots of magic spells being cast in order for good to defeat evil. Agnieszka was a bit immature at times but her relationship with the Dragon was charming. I kept wanting to get to the end because there were so MANY trials she had to overcome but overall it was a good read. I'd say it's a fun fantasy book that would work for people more interested in YA fantasy.
